What Moves You?

A touchstone

This has been defined as:

  1. A piece of fine-grained dark schist or jasper formerly used for testing alloys of gold by observing the color of the mark that they made…
  2. A standard or criterion by which something is judged or recognised

Do you have something or someone in your life that you measure by the mark it/they have made on you?

I was talking to a friend of mine the other week and we were brainstorming ideas of things that I could use to bring me back to a state of resourcefulness if I happened to find myself thinking less than helpful thoughts.

Our senses can instantly “anchor” us to certain states – good or bad.  For example the smell of Perkins paste or Clag glue could take you straight back to primary school.  A certain song on the radio can immediately take you back to a certain time and place in your past.  Or the touch of a certain fabric or texture can have a particular “hold” on you.

Whilst talking to my friend an image popped into my head of when I was around 6 or 7 years of age.  I used to wear this beautiful pink and white dress that had a piece of pink velvet threaded around the waist.  I loved to wear that dress and I loved to constantly touch that velvet ribbon even more!

Now my friend is so amazing she jumped online and purchased a piece of hot pink velvet and had it mailed to me. Amazingly it’s the same colour and thickness of the piece that used to be in my dress.  It came in the form of a choker and therefore has a clasp on it.  I wear it threaded through a loop on my jeans and I feel it throughout the day and it instantly makes me feel happy.

It’s an amazingly helpful tool to bring me to a great state.  So I’m wondering … is there something or someone in your life that can become your touchstone?  Even thinking back to things that made you happy in the past is a very uplifting exercise.

Give it go!
